Detailed Description
The project sought to create a better relationship between all road users, and make it safer for cyclists on the road.
Cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users and are involved in hundreds of fatal accidents each year, many of which as a result of the blind spots of large vehicles. While there is a responsibility for the drivers of large vehicles to take note of and pay respect to other more venerable road users, cyclists to have to share that responsibility for their own safety. The drivers of large vehicles have a complex and wide variety of things to deal with while driving, including large blind spots that cyclists can very easily be concealed in.
We looked to develop a vinyl wrap that would visualise where the blind spots are on large vehicles, helping cyclist know where they are and in turn avoid them. By highlighting the physical spaces upon which the drivers of large vehicles cannot see, cyclists can position themselves more accurately on the road and dramatically reduce the risk of being in a serious accident.
Through prototyping in both 2D and 3D, and both physical and digital, we have developed the basic elements of our proposal, although are looking to further develop this idea and test on a larger scale.
